Brighton Surf Life Saving Club
“Fantastic, awesome, that’s sick!!”
is how our junior members described being a nominated charity for Paddle Round The Pier 2017 – and we agree! Being supported by Paddle is a huge honour and we’re ecstatic to be part of the world’s biggest free beach & water sports festival.
Paddle Round The Pier is our annual highlight and at the very heart of our club. We share the same objectives of increasing joy, sea safety knowledge and participation for all – whilst spreading ‘Aloha’ spirit sprinkled with love & respect for the sea across our great city and beyond.
Our trained and certified lifeguards provide full time search and rescue services as well as lifeguard cover and training for Paddle and other events, and this nomination enables us to improve our training and widen participation.
We’re passionate about the water and enabling everyone, from all backgrounds, to enjoy and benefit from the sea in a safe and responsible manner. Our child and adult members are taught surf safety, basic lifesaving skills and surf and beach sports (wading, surf swimming, board-paddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays), and train in the sea all year round! We build resilience and confidence, enhance communities and strive to keep alive the legacy of the great annual Paddle weekend with everyone enjoying the sea safely throughout the rest of the year.
As a children’s charity with 150+ members, every summer we work with Paddle on the Schools Surf Life Saving Programme, where we aim to widen participation throughout the city by inviting hundreds of pupils from primary and secondary schools to learn and ‘have a go’ at Surf Life Saving. The money raised at Paddle in 2017 will go towards our work in training and developing future Lifeguards as well as increasing participation through our child inclusion initiatives.
We’d like to say a big thank you to the Paddle team for their support and Aloha to all the wonderful people who are going to donate at Paddle 2017 – THANK YOU!Rick Crockett
