We have already had a lot of interest from competitors in many of the events and it all looks as if, yet again the Paddle Event will grow and raise even more money for worthy causes -as well as having a lot of fun for all.

It is always heartening when you can be truly proud of a friend’s achievements but in this case we are glowing.

James runs the local website Sharkbait and has provided pretty good surf predictions for our local spots since last century. In a town of transients and generally erratic surf his website has formed the hub of a lively surf and watersports community. He has also been a keen and active member of the Paddle Crew for many years.

He has recently developed, with a friend, an iphone app which takes this community feeling to a new level – if the web is all about sharing this is the tool for surfers.

In an exerpt from his website :

The Sharkbait Surf Reporter App allows users to find out about surfing conditions by sharing real-time surf reports, check out where their friends are getting the best waves and upload photos and messages. Available from the App store on iTunes, the Sharkbait App is priced at just £1.49.
It has been developed by two surfers and best friends from Brighton, James and Ian. James has been uploading daily surf reports for the South Coast for the last 12 years, with one of the first ever surf report websites Sharkbait.co.uk.

James, when we spoke to him said that he had really just developed the app for himself, but it is available at Surf Iphone App as the more people who share surf reports and upload eyeballs the better.

Download it Here

He took a few of the new 2012 Paddle Stickers out to the Islands and sent us this photo, we are jealous of course.

He bought his inflatable SUP at last year’s Paddle from the guys at Custard Point – he was able to take it easily on the plane and, as you see in the photo it fits into his small car easily.

The event, which took place last Friday to Sunday (1 to 3 July) has been hailed a resounding success and the “best ever” by visitors, exhibitors, competitors and organisers alike, with around 45,000-50,000 people attending.

The sunshine shone down on this year’s “Paddle” which certainly helped with the success, but it was without a doubt the huge array of land, beach and water attractions, sports and other entertainment that drew record crowds down to Hove Lawns.

Amongst the activities enjoyed by spectators were the mass ‘Paddle Round The Pier’, skateboarding and BMX park sponsored by Nike, the huge array of live music and a crowd-favourite – the ‘Paddle Something Unusual’.

Dave Samuel, event director said: “The smiling faces of everyone present said it all.

“My favourites this year have been the sandy beach we built on the prom and, as always, the disability accessibility beach.”

“Also we had some great freesports ramps, which ramps have now been donated to the Brighton Youth Centre and city parks for the all to enjoy.”

Amongst the hundreds of exhibitors taking part was Hunter Joslin, inventor of the Indo Board balance trainer who travelled over from the United States and said: “This is my first time at the event and it has blown me away!

“They say it’s the largest free beach festival in Europe, but I would say it’s by far the biggest in the world. It’s bigger than anything I’ve ever been to.”

To keep up-to-date with the final total, plus photos, videos and news of next year’s event check out www.paddleroundthepier.com and www.facebook.com/paddleroundthepier.
