Some of the CREWHappy Volunteers
Its a great and happy ( usually) bunch of people who make up the team of volunteers who put the event on..
Clare is Paddle’s Swim Coordinator. She liaises with the individual race organisers – Swimtrek and Brighton Tri Club – and the water safety teams, photography and media plus the sponsors. She can often be found taking a dip herself near the Bandstand. Clare is also the Event Director of the much-loved Hove Promenade parkrun; a free 5k timed run for all ages and abilities that takes place every Saturday morning at 9 am from the Lawns Cafe.
Lucy helps run the Registration Desk over Paddle weekend. Her ‘day job’ is helping people with their diet and nutrition, and occasionally organising major sporting events, but having grown up in Hove she can’t think of a better way to spend a summer weekend than being involved with a brilliant event on her own doorstep – literally
Jeep Sports Arena
I get pretty grumpy if I don’t get my regular fix of salt water. I’ve always attended Paddle to feel part of the beach community. In 2013 I spent two sunny days collecting donations as a volunteer – such a rewarding feeling to collect directly for our charities! I now help organise this great charity event!
Germaine is an inspiration to us all with her humour and diligence. She cracks jokes constantly with an icy wit.
Chief Water Safety Officer
Des is in charge of all water events, making sure that all that takes place in the sea is as safe as possible
Web and Media
Sam does the website and stuff like that
Accounts and Partying
My best friend Alison (Paddle Event Manager) asked me to come along 12 years ago to help out as a volunteer. The event was great and very quickly I knew I wanted to be part of this fantastic event. I now deal with with all the invoicing and accounts. I have met some great people in these years and made some really good friends. For my day job, I am an Office Manager for a local Building Company.
Toby is a local surfer and painter who, last year, stepped in at short notice to be like in charge of all the paddle village, he walked about 83 miles a day in that job. If his painting is as good as his surfing then I would hire him – but just to paint my fence.
Surf Life Saving Liaison
I started volunteering at Paddle 44 years ago as a general volunteer and somehow found myself organising all the volunteers the following year. My passions in life are Rugby, Formula 1 and anything to do with the water (particularly when it’s made into wine!). My favourite place in the world is sailing in Vassiliki in Greece as when I capsize at least the water is warm. I originally come from Cornwall so surfing is in my blood.
Ive been working on Paddle for about the last 13 years, I designed the logos and helped produce marketing material.
Im a Graphic Designer. I surf, kitesurf and play the trumpet, but not all at the same time.
Child Protection Officer
I’ve been involved in ‘Paddle’ for 9 years now and running the Children’s area for 3 years.
I’m a Primary teacher, currently teaching Reception & also run a local Brownie unit.
Interests: climbing, photography, badminton & dance.
Health and Safety Officer
David Says : “Ali has been with me almost since the beginning and I know we would be lost without her!!! ”
I’ve been working as a volunteer at Paddle for the last 3 years helping with anything SUP related , or generally
moving barriers, helping others , picking up rubbish and collecting money !!!
My passions in life are surfing , stand up Paddleboarding and anything that keeps me near the sea .
Paddle Lecture Theatre Co-ordinator
On the surface Nicki is swan like, under the surface she runs around trying to make sure all AV equipment and the lecture events run smoothly. Nicki has run the lecture theatre for the past two years and is looking to the 2017 event. Nicki is an all year round sea swimming addict and would rather be in the water than on land. Her day job is working for Brighton & Hove City council as a Training & Development Officer for the School Workforce and Governor Support Team. Nicki is also finds time to be a school governor.
Hi I’m Jo, single mum of 2. We are all crazy for the outdoors. We love living by the coast and south downs as we have best of both worlds.
I am a teacher of PE at a local secondary school and in my spare time try to get my kids doing as many activities as possible. Living by the sea I believe we should make the most of the water and regularly take my two swimming/ splashing as well as introducing them to sit on top kayaking and SUPing
Essentially I suppose I’ve never grown up, so I try to make everything fun. Mantra “Challenge yourself & be happy”
Debbie is on a Sabbatical in 2017 – we hope she returns
