Smooth, glassy water is deep. The surface stays flat because the current is moving over a deep channel with nothing to trip it up. That is where you want to be.
Dark water is deep water. Light has to travel further through deep water and comes back to your eye as a darker shade. Pale, shallow water - water you can see the bottom through - is shallow and almost always hiding rocks.
Choppy, dimpled water signals turbulence over shallow, uneven bedrock. You'll feel bumps under your boat if you run it.
White, frothy, aerated water marks hydraulic features - holes, waves, and pour-overs - where water has plunged over something and is mixing violently with air. A frothy patch that holds its position while water flows through it is a feature, not just aerated current.

The Downstream V (Tongue): Your Safe Route Through the Rapid
A downstream V - also called the tongue - is the V-shaped point of deepest, smoothest water entering a rapid from upstream. It is the safest line through the rapid in nearly every situation a beginner will encounter.
Picture standing on the bank looking downstream. You will see a clear V shape pointing at you, with the point of the V pointing upriver toward where the current is entering the rapid. The arms of the V spread out as the current fans into the boulders, waves, and holes below. The point of the V is where the current is fastest, smoothest, and deepest.

An upstream V is the mirror of the downstream V. It points downstream, away from you, and it marks water that is being pushed back up toward the obstacle that created it.
You will see upstream Vs forming on the faces of standing waves, at the tops of holes, and at the base of pillows. An eddy forms because the obstacle diverts the main current. Right behind the rock, the water has to go somewhere, so it recirculates upstream in a circular pattern. The seam between the eddy's upstream-flowing water and the main current's downstream-flowing water is called the eddy line.
The eddy line is one of the most useful - and most underrated - features on a river. It tells you exactly where the obstacle ends and the calm pocket begins. A clean, narrow eddy line usually means a friendly eddy. A wide, boil-laden eddy line means the water is turbulent at the seam and flipping is more likely.
To catch an eddy, ferry or angle your boat across the eddy line from downstream to upstream, then let the eddy's upstream current carry you to the back of the pocket. Once you are in the eddy, take a breath, look downstream, and pick your next move.

Standing Waves and Wave Trains: Friendly Pushers
A standing wave is a wave that holds its position in the river even as water flows through it. They form when fast water runs over a sudden shallow shelf and the water surface piles up, breaks, and recirculates in the same spot.

Boat scouting means floating along the top edge of the rapid on river-left or river-right, reading features as you drift without committing to the main flow. It's faster and useful for Class II and easy Class III where you can see the whole rapid from your boat.
For any new rapid, follow a simple five-step process:
Step 1 - Pull over. Get to the bank well above the lip. Don't try to read while drifting.
Step 2 - Look from bottom to top. Start at the bottom of the rapid and work upstream. Features at the bottom are where you'll end up - identify the exit first, then the midpoint, then the entry.

Set up an aggressive swimming position before you need it. Hold your feet together and on the surface, point your feet downstream, and lay back with your chest up and your head looking downstream at what's coming. This is the defensive position.
