DC Storm Raise Money For Charity
Paddle Something Unusual round the pier 2010 was a great all round experience for all involved. We at DC Storm decided to make our raft to resemble half of a football pitch seeing as the World Cup was on at the time, and we also have a German office.
We invited our German colleagues over to Brighton to have an England vs Germany penalty shoot-out whilst trying to navigate the course on our raft. Unfortunately on the day, although blisteringly hot, the conditions weren’t in anyone’s favour with a 20MPH on-shore wind meaning only one craft actually made it round the entire course.
Despite the unfavourable conditions, the day was great fun and there was a real sense of camaraderie between the competing teams, helping each other out with craft construction, and generally laughing at each other’s attempts to actually make it out to sea. The other events happening on the Hove Lawns (lots of water sports related stalls, food stalls etc) also meant that folks not taking part in the PSU event still had plenty of stuff to entertain them, particularly the kids, with bouncy castles and the like.
We finished off the day with a BBQ and some beers on the beach with everyone who had helped make the raft, or had helped in any way. Importantly, we also managed to raise £1500 for three very worthwhile charities while having lots of fun. All in all, this was a great event and one that we shall definitely be taking part in again in 2011.
The raft has been dismantled and is in storage awaiting this year’s rebirth. Let’s just hope the wind is a little nicer to us all this year!
