1.5k Swim Round the Pier
SwimTrek bring to you this beautiful linear swim around the iconic remains of the West Pier and finishing on the beach in the middle of Paddle Village on Hove Lawns.
This swim is a great way for both experienced and inexperienced sea swimmers to complete a swim around Brighton’s iconic West Pier which also gives a swimmers’ eye view of Hove’s classic seafront architecture. It’s a challenging swim for the novice open water swimmer, but the views of the beach and sense of achievement are well worth the effort. Swimmers wanting to race the iconic 1.5km route or those looking to enter their first open water swim are welcome.
Please note: On the day of the swim, we recommend you bring an additional pair of flip flops and a light jumper/fleece to walk to the start area which is located approximately a 25 minute walk from the registration area at Paddle Village. You will need to leave plenty of time to check-in and bag drop at Paddle Village then walk back to the start point of the swim to the east of West Pier.
- £20 Early Bird Special (until midnight on Sunday 25th March)
- £25 Standard Entry Fee (until midnight on Sunday 17th June)
- £30 Late Entry Fee (up to, and including, on the day if places still available)
THE MINIMUM AGE FOR ENTRY IS 12 years
The entry fee covers some basic costs of swim hats, petrol for the safety boats, insurance, etc. The remainder of the entry fee goes towards this year’s charities.
We recommend you register on-line beforehand as numbers are capped to ensure a sufficient level of safety cover; places are normally sold out in advance of festival weekend. However, if spaces are still available, you will be able to register (at the revised price) on the day.
After registering your entry on-line, full details with final arrangements will be emailed to you approximately one week prior to Paddle weekend. Please note, all swimmers will need to check-in on the day at the Swimtrek stand in Paddle Village (which will be located directly opposite the main registration tent) in order to confirm attendance and to complete essential course and safety briefings.
Please note, check-in will open at 8.30am at the Swimtrek tent in Paddle Village and close at 9.30am promptly so please arrive in good time. Remember, there is a 25 minute walk to the revised start point of the swim (on the beach in front of the WC block by the Shelter Hall development (opposite the foot of West Street)) after check-in. On the day there will be a bag drop facility available at the Swimtrek tent in Paddle Village.
Valuables will be left at your own risk and Paddle/Swimtrek cannot accept any liability for lost or damaged items. We recommend bringing a pair of flip flops and a light top that can be worn to the start point on the beach. These will be bundled up and returned to the finish gantry on the beach at Paddle Village at the end of the swim.
The water temperature in the sea at Brighton in July can range between 14-16°C which will add to the challenge of this event. As for the air temperature for this time of year you can expect 18-22°C. There are both wetsuits and non-wetsuit categories – swimmers can decide on the day which category they would like to participate in. However, if it is unsuitably cold, organisers have the right to require all competitors to wear a suitable wetsuit.
The safety of our swimmers is our number one priority. Obviously an event like this is somewhat at the mercy of the elements. Organisers reserve the right to vary the course if necessary. In the unlikely event that both the scheduled swim and the Sunday back-up slot are cancelled by the organisers due to sea conditions being too unstable, a 50% refund will be given to entrants.
We are sure that you will appreciate that a lot of time and effort goes into arranging an event like this and whilst we endeavour to keep the costs to an absolute minimum, thanks to a team which is entirely made up of unpaid volunteers, a number of costs are incurred in advance (swim hats, fuel for the boats, insurance etc) plus we want to raise as much money as possible for our wonderful charities. More details of these are available on our “Charities” page. Please note, refunds will not be given in any other circumstances.
Afterwards, why don’t you plan to stay on and enjoy the unique atmosphere at this wonderful weekend festival – repeatedly voted one of the best days out in the UK and previously voted “Best Festival” at the Brighton and Hove Business Awards in spite of exceptionally stiff competition.
