The Sussex Academy of Music (SAM) provided a quality backline and Echo Digital once again be filmed the band’s performances in sparkling high definition.

Here’s some of the bands and musicians who performed in 2010

Barulho

Barulho
The 30 piece strong bateria of drummers, Barulho!!…Samba Reggae Funk Fusion at its finest! Blending traditional Samba styles with Funk, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop and Afro beat, Barulho bring a unique twist of infectious rhythms and a thumping performance that’s sure to get all up and dancing their socks off!

Lucky Jim

Lucky Jim
Lucky Jim’s music may share the kind of single-minded poetic vision that you’ll find in the youthful works of Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Serge Gainsbourg and Leonard Cohen yet Gordon Grahame’s Celtic grit gives it a compellingflavour all of its own. Lucky Jim aka Gordon Grahame first came to public attention when his track “ you’re lovely to me “ was used in an advertising campaign for Kingsmill bread . The track was taken from his SKINT records release Our Troubles End Tonight and was No.1 in the UK folk charts. He has just finished his fifth album with Brighton based producer Tim Bidwell and has also just released a new single – Jellybean Confessional – on Ho Hum records.

Vandeville Falls

Vandeville Falls
2010 looks like being an exciting year for Vandeville Falls. Having started the year supporting artists such as the Bittersweets from Nashville and Crooked Still from Boston, they took April out to go writing in Nashville. Now they are gearing up for several festival appearances throughout spring and into summer, including London City Showcase, The Bearded Theory in Derby, the Darvel Festival in Scotland and the Greenbelt Festival in Cheltenham, before going into the studio towards the end of the year to work on their new album.

The Half Sisters

The Half Sisters
Sisters Isadora and Freya-rose together with their best friend Fifi, began busking across the streets of Brighton and London to create the free spirited world of the ‘The Half Sisters’. Playing music with fun energy and celebration in mind, the girls play an electrifying show with face paints and games. Ukulele, flute and drums combined with three point harmonies create a lush and mesmerising chorus of catchy pop hooks and adorable honesty.

Los Albertos

Los Albertos
Los Albertos are a six-piece ensemble of trilby adorned ska-dance protagonists who’ve been transmitting their hi-energy melodies to the nation since their formation in 2002. Christened by the barmaid at their debut gig, their fistful of grinning 2-tone skank with a twist of Santana has drawn attention from far beyond the pebbled beaches of their hometown Brighton, leading to regular appearances at Glastonbury and Beautiful Days festivals.

Wide Eyed Order

Wide Eyed Order
Rising from a cold winter in January 2008, Wide Eyed Order quickly formed a tight knit group of musicians determined to bring something new and original to the Brighton scene. Eclectic descriptions from reviewers range from mariachi gypsy ska to folk infused acoustic punk country. Now numbering ten in number, the Order have quickly gained a reputation for their rousing and lively live sets (as well as more intimate acoustic sets) in venues around the South Coast and festivals such as Small World and the Out Of The Ordinary.

BOY COM

BOY COM

“One of my favorite bands at the moment…’Who Needs ‘Em Anyway?’ is a definite summer classic!” – The Guardian

BOY COM (short for BOY COMMUNICATION) is a 7 piece Kick-Ass-Party-Hip-Hop collective, whose aim is to make you groove till the end of the night – even after you’ve left the venue. Its like the coolest house party you’ve ever been to: there’s plenty of booze, beautiful girls, and BOY COM are providing your ideal soundtrack. With their new single ‘Who Needs ‘Em Anyway?’ dropping in May on Naim Records, you can expect the phatest beats, the smoothest basslines and the roaring-est brass section you’ve ever heard! There ain’t a chance in hell you won’t love them

Super Lungs

Super Lungs
Their recent EP went straight into the Itunes essentials chart at number 21 before climbing to number 19. As a result the single, ‘LA DI DA’ was chosen by Director Nancy Stein and Freedom Girl Productions to feature in the US film ‘All Ages Night’ due out early 2010. The band have three tracks on a solo album by renowned composer and producer David Courtney who has written songs for Leo Sayer, Roger Daltrey and Paul McCartney among countless others. The Railing Stains

The Railing Stains
The Railing Stains are a Rolling Stones Tribute band, and just like The Stones, it’s all about being there, seeing them perform live on the night – they capture that same 60’s raw energy. This is the band chosen by The Stones themselves to appear at the first ever Rolling Stones Convention at The Brixton Academy. The Stains have seen Jesse Wood (Ronnie’s son) become a member of the band, toured with Art Wood and the ledgendary international producer, Charlie Skarbeck (Dusty Springfield, Hall & Oats UB40), produce the bands first album. The Stains move from strength to strength and are currently touring the Uk and Europe.

Transformer

Transformer
Formed by Johny Giles (vocals, trumpet, keyboards) and Craig Mack (bass guitar), Transformer really took shape when the pair moved to Brighton, quickly gaining a reputation for their firing live shows at venues throughout the city. Now comprised of Johny, Craig, Ben Adamo (guitar, keys) and Stephane Hourdille (drums), the group’s tautly-honed grooves draw inspiration from far-flung corners of the musical galaxy, meaning that their floor-friendly sound fits as comfortably alongside DJs like Erol Alkan as does supporting Holy Fuck, not to mention their extensive run of both British and international festival performances. Drawing on influences that include Talking Heads, James Chance, Funkadelic, and A Certain Ratio, Transformer’s sound has also pricked up the ears of Channel 4 producers on the show ‘The In-Betweeners’, where the band played live in one of the first season’s episodes. Their first single “Cinema Car” earned them the recommended list on I-Tunes, NME A-list, much national and international press coverage, a European tour including gigs at the legendary Paradiso in Amsterdam and Fleche D’or in Paris, as well as a slot at Glastonbury 2009.

Mean Poppa Lean

Mean Poppa Lean
The band looks set to make waves in 2010 after a very successful 2009. As well as clocking up appearances at V festival (Stafford and Chelmsford), Isle of Wight festival and The Great Escape (which saw them nominated for an award besides artists like THOM YORKE, THE PRODIGY and ZZ TOP amongst others), they also clocked up support for acts as diverse as CALVIN HARRIS and …..
Currently the band are booking a SECOND UK TOUR in May and June to coincide with the release of their second single ‘SOMETHING, SOMETHING’, and leading up to the festival season. They are already booked into several festivals in the UK and Europe, with many more to be confirmed. MEAN POPPA LEAN are looking set to be one of hardest-working bands on the underground scene this year, and are open to all offers.

We help young musicians by putting them into bands and giving them the opportunity to play live in front of a real audience. Throughout the duration of the 6 Week Course, students are encouraged to develop as individual musicians, as well as learning everything there is to know about being part of a real, working rock band. For those who aren’t quite ready for the full course, can try it out at one of our one-off Jam Sessions!

The Beautiful Word

The Beautiful Word
The Beautiful Word are a quintet set for the top in the world of mystery pop. Formed in January 2007 by front girls Emily and Megan. They are releasing a brand new 6 track EP in June 2010, simply titled “Mystery Pop”. Described as “Dreamily sophisticated on one hand and endearingly juvenile on the other “, their positive energy is infectious, and the performance they give will bring a smile to even the most miserable of faces! The Beautiful Word have undertaken a series of high-profile performances including storming sets at The Secret Garden Party and Brighton Live festivals. They have also taken on some prestigious support slots including Ellie Goulding and The Mojo Fins. The band have received the steady support of local and regional press and radio, and aim to continue this success through 2010 and beyond. Eighteen months of hard work has supplied the band with a dedicated fan base spread across the UK. Their proudest moment so far was being praised for one of “the most memorable sets at Club NME [Brighton] of the year.”

THE SWING NINJAS

THE SWING NINJAS

Dirty Horn Gypsy Swing Trio
From the ancient forests of New Orleans, the high mountain temples of Paris and an underground lair in Romania come a swing trio shedding light and Ninja Happiness wherever they go. Like a throwing star made of puff-pastry, these Three will sing you into heaven withsugared ballads, make you wiggle to back-room jive and get you swinging harder than a monkey overdosing on bananas.
On stage or in the street, The Swing Ninjas are comfortable in any setting. They excel at being fully mobile – able to move around a group, serenading each and every person in the room as they go. Their acoustic sound and ability to roam freely makes them stand out from the crowd – no need to be stuck and static attached to microphones – their instruments will sing out loudly, their voices will break through. Their Musical Menu? Try a Manouche-guitar salad to start, Helicon sausage with a Sax and Clarinet jus for the main course, with some flambéed shaker eggs for dessert. Bon Appétit!

Jouis

Jouis
Since the idea of Jouis sprung into life in 2008 they have played many a gig, in many a place, to many a dancing crowd. They celebrated their 1st birthday at the 2009 Camden Crawl “Hot Tips” stage to a one in one out crowd which was quickly followed by festival appearances at Lounge On The Farm and Secret Garden Party. October 2009 saw the release of the Yellow Meadows EP which was accompanied by the Yellow Meadows Tour, a string of packed out gigs across the South of England. At the turn of the decade the Yellow Meadows EP was made available digitally from iTunes and most other download sites. Jouis jumped back in the van for their second tour of the South and shall soon be scooting back to the studio to record their next release…..But above all, Jouis means to enjoy,

Red Jackson

Red Jackson
Red Jackson are a rootsy trio serving up classic Rhythm & Blues, stripping the genre down to its basics – guitar, vocals, harmonica, drums and double bass – and building it back up again with a unique Red Jackson twist: stirring in diverse flavours such as Sun Studio and Blue Note labels to create authentic retro grooves with upbeat contemporary appeal. Since they formed in 2005 they’ve not only played regularly around the South, taking their show to bars, clubs, restaurants, festivals, functions and parties, but they are also professional street performers and have twice been booked form the main stage at Hat Fair (the UK’s leading Celebration of Street Arts). Other festivals have included: Chichester Festivities, Winchester Water Festival, Reading Water Festival, Eastbourne Magnificent Motors vintage car show, Eastbourne Beer Festival, the Beer Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Festival, and in 2008 they were invited to play at Chateau de Lartigolle, near Toulouse – listed in Harpers and Queen as one of the top 100 places in the world. They have recorded three albums and have received airplay in the UK, the US, France and Spain.

Fat 45

Fat 45
Fat 45 formed in 2006, inspired by the dance music of the 1940’s 50’s – original R&B, jump jive, rock & roll and swing – joining the ever increasing partner dance and music scene both in the UK and the rest of the world. Fat 45 give an authentic and exciting performance that is as much about the show as it is about the music, though above all it’s about getting the crowd swinging and bouncing.
Blistering eleven piece big band bringing back the dance music of the 1940’s & 50’s with their slick quiffs, sharp suits, swingin hips & high heels. Fat 45 play jump jive, swing, rhythm & blues and rock & roll setting the dance floors alight wherever they go, guaranteed to make every party shake, rattle & roll…
All you juice hounds, hep cats, night hawks, jitterbug zooters & hop heads get your finest thread and cut some rug to the boogie woogie big beat sound of the Fat 45…

I wanted to say a big thank you to The Brunswick, Yellow Fish, SAM, Echo, Copy Dog, all the bands and to everyone who has been involved so far, we couldn’t have done it without you.
