The Wave Project – Grant Support Update
Paddle Round The Pier’s generous grant of £4,680.00 will be used to deliver weekly surf club sessions to The Wave Project in Brighton’s growing base of surf club members.
Our surf club members are local children and young people aged 8-18 years of age who have participated in our six- week surf therapy courses. We work with children from both Brighton and Hove, as well as West Sussex who have mental health issues or who are at risk of social isolation. Each surf club member pays a subsidised fee of £5.00 towards the cost of the surf club session and The Wave Project covers the remaining cost of £15.00 per surf club member.
We have almost 30 members, and we see this membership growing as our 2019 surf therapy courses are delivered. Our surf club is a key service for our young surfers to continue growing important peer to peer friendships, build their confidence and self-esteem, and also continue to improve and learn new surf & water skills.
Surf club helps local children and young people like B.
“The Wave Project has totally inspired B and how surfing has helped in so many ways – it has the right balance of challenge, excitement, relaxation, social participation and being part of a group as well as helping with his confidence, mood and sensory difficulties – wearing his wetsuit especially helps with his proprioception difficulties. It ticks all the boxes really. Plus we parents get a bit of rest, can chat to other parents and have a cup of tea on the beach! Billy always says being in the sea is where he feels happiest and where his worries all go away.” B’s mum.
During the summer months, your Paddle Round The Pier grant will help us to deliver weekly surf club sessions in the sea which will focus on growing and improving surfing skills, playing team building games and participating in sea- based activities. The surf club sessions will also include learning and practising Stand Up Paddle Boarding at Southwick Beach. Any surplus from the grant will be used to support our autumn/winter sessions, which we are aiming to build on this year. Our land-based sessions could include: surf fitness & yoga sessions, beach cleans, educational activities and a winter trip to Sky High trampoline park.
