The best infrared patio heaters for wind solve a problem most people assume they cannot solve. Everybody who has sat outside in October knows that wind kills a patio heater, and the assumption is that the machine has broken. It has not. A convection heater really is useless in a gust, because it heats air […]

Garage shops have a heating problem that living spaces never do. You open the door to 20-degree air, your hands are cold in five minutes, and the tools you just laid out on the bench are covered in condensation dust. The fix is not a bigger space heater from the hardware store aisle — it […]

Apartment AC is one of those problems that never goes away. The building has no central air, the window crank is the wrong shape for a window unit, and the lease says no drilling. That leaves portable air conditioners for apartments as the realistic answer, and it is a bigger decision than most buyers expect […]

The best DIY mini split kits for homeowners are the ones that let a reasonably handy person mount two boxes, run a line through the wall, and have cooling by Sunday. That sounds simple, and in most cases it is. What tripped me up the first time I dug into these listings is how loosely […]

Choosing multi zone mini split systems for whole homes is harder than it looks, because a retail listing rarely tells you the two things that decide whether the install works: how the heads are sized and how much heating capacity survives a cold snap. We spent weeks comparing 12 of the most-reviewed systems in this […]

A 12,000 BTU mini split is the 1-ton workhorse of ductless cooling, and it is sized for a bedroom of roughly 450 to 550 square feet. A well-insulated, shaded room can stretch toward 750 square feet. I have spent the last two seasons reading every spec sheet, warranty clause and owner complaint I could find […]

If your garage runs hot in July and freezes in January, the fix is a ductless mini split for garage use, not a bigger fan. I have spent the last few months working through the current crop of single-zone inverter heat pumps, reading spec sheets, digging through owner reports, and comparing noise ratings, low-ambient heating […]

The best mini split air conditioners come down to three winners for most people: the Senville LETO 12,000 BTU as the all-round pick, the COSTWAY 12,000 BTU for value and quiet operation, and the Rellytech 12,000 BTU if you plan to install it yourself. We compared ten ductless heat pumps on cooling capacity, SEER2 efficiency, […]

A bedroom dehumidifier has one job it cannot fake: pulling moisture out of the air without waking you up. Run a standard 50 dB compressor box three feet from a pillow and the hum becomes the first thing you hear every night, then the last. That is why the best quiet dehumidifiers for bedrooms are […]

Short answer: the hOmeLabs 50-pint machine is the best whole house dehumidifier most humid-climate buyers should buy, the Yaufey 150-pint is the smarter spend for an oversized or persistently wet basement, and if your air conditioner already has return ductwork, the Aprilaire E100 Pro is the one to have a technician integrate. I built this […]
