  1. Find two sturdy trees. Pick trees about 8 to 10 feet apart with trunks at least wrist-thick. They will hold the ridge pole that carries the whole structure.
  2. Set your ridge pole. Rest a long, straight branch between the two trees at a height of 3 to 6 feet off the ground. Lower for windy conditions, higher if you want to sit up inside. Lash it with paracord or natural cordage if you can.
  3. Lay the ribs.Lean smaller branches against the ridge pole at about a 45 degree angle. Space them 4 to 6 inches apart along the length of the ridge. Thicker ribs hold more thatching.
  4. Add the thatching. Start at the bottom of the ribs and lay pine boughs, fern fronds, or grass. Overlap each row by at least a third so water sheds downward. Aim for two inches of compressed thatching at minimum.
  5. Build a reflector wall. Stack logs or lean more branches vertically against the open side you want blocked. A 2-foot-tall reflector wall blocks wind and reflects fire heat back into your sleeping area.
  6. Add your bed. Pile dry leaves, bracken, or evergreen boughs to a depth of at least 6 inches inside the lean-to. Compress them down before you lie on them.
  7. Build a fire. Set a small fire 4 to 6 feet in front of the open side, angled toward your reflector wall. You now have a warm, wind-protected sleeping spot that took 60 to 90 minutes to build.

The lean-to works best when you have a campfire to lean it against. Without a fire, it is a windbreak, not a warm place to sleep. If temperatures are below 50F, build a debris hut instead.

How to Build a Debris Hut (The Warmest Survival Shelter)

If I had to pick one bushcraft shelter to learn, this is it. A properly built debris hut is the warmest survival shelter you can make without modern materials. I have personally slept warm in 19F weather inside one with no fire at all, and I have read accounts of experienced woodsmen staying comfortable at -19F with the same design.

  1. Find a ridge pole anchor. A single sturdy stump 18 to 24 inches tall works perfectly. If you do not have a stump, lash two poles together in an X or use a tripod.
  2. Set the ridge pole. Rest one end of a long branch in the fork or against the stump. The other end rests on the ground. Your body should fit underneath with a few inches of clearance on each side and 6 to 12 inches above your head.
  3. Lay the ribs. Lean sticks against the ridge pole along both sides, spaced 4 to 6 inches apart. They should form a narrow A-shape from above.
  4. Add horizontal stringers. Lay thinner branches horizontally across the ribs on both sides. These hold the thatching in place so it does not slump.
  5. Pile on the debris. This is the critical step. Pile leaves, pine needles, bracken, or dry grass on the entire structure. The aim is at least 2 feet of uncompressed debris, and more is better. Rake material from a wide area around your hut so you do not strip the local forest floor.
  6. Add a final layer. Cap the debris layer with evergreen boughs, bark slabs, or a tarp. This top layer sheds rain before it reaches the insulating debris below.
  7. Stuff the door. Fill a stuff sack or pile of leaves with debris and use it as a door plug when you are inside. This blocks the largest single opening.
  8. Build a thick bed. Pile 8 to 12 inches of dry leaves inside before you lie down. The ground will rob you of heat faster than the air will, and this is the only fix.

A good test: when you crawl in at night, you should feel almost claustrophobic. If you can sit up, the hut is too large. If you have to crawl in sideways, it is probably about right.

A-Frame and Tarp Shelter Options for Fast Setup

A rock overhang or shallow cave gives instant wind and weather cover. Build a reflector wall across the open side, pile a thick bed of leaves or boughs on the ground, and you have a serviceable overnight camp. Always check for animal inhabitants before you commit.

A snow cave works in deep snow conditions. Dig into a drift on the leeward side of a slope, hollow out a chamber just large enough for your body, and cut ventilation holes near the roof. Building too big. New builders always make their first shelter twice the size it needs to be. Resist the urge. Smaller is warmer, faster to build, and easier to insulate properly.
